Well this Saturday was my daughter Meghan's first day of work. She went in for training. She is 15 years old. I wasn't sure about her working yet (she is still my baby!), but she was anxious. She is working at a friend's blueberry patch. They own cranberry bogs and this patch has been in the family since the 1930s. The road is a dead end and my friend's house is right across the street from the blueberry stand. She works on Tuesdays from 8-5. She can bring a book while she sits in the stand. She gets paid $8 an hour (under the table). If she picks blueberries and puts them in containers then she can sell them and keep the money. The blueberries are $1.60 a pound for anyone who picks them and $3 for a pound container that Meghan picks and sells herself.
Meghan is so excited to be making her own money and have that little bit of freedom. It is really hard for her dad and me. We kept stopping by to "visit". We had to bring her a snack, more water, lunch, etc.. I am glad that our friends are so close. I know that they are around and can check on her during the day. I also know if she has a problem that she can call them on her cell phone and they will be right there.
Hopefully this will get easier for us and she will continue to love her first job!
Good for you for writing through Meghan going to work! And all of your pictures are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWendy,
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to have a "first" job! Did anyone buy blueberries today? Did she pick any blueberries today and put them into containers?
Kris
Hi, Wendy~
ReplyDeleteWhat a great summer job. Love the pictures! Are you feeling more comfortable with her having a job after her first day, or is it too early to tell? How is dad feeling about the experience?
Wendy,
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful for you to share your daughter's first working adventures! Where is this stand? I may have to take a drive over to get some fresh blueberries. YUM!!
She was a slow steady for her first day which was perfect. She didn't pick any because she was a little nervous to venture from the stand and miss someone.
ReplyDeleteDad is just as bad or worse than I am about her being at her first job. It is a litle nerve wracking leaving her there. I did sit in the car for a little while before I left and then I only went homw which is 5 minutes away because I wanted to be able to be close in case she needed me. I also can't help but think of Molly Bish. I try not to let it cloud my judgement, but I do remember it and it does affect some of my decicions with my girls.
Wendy, I cannot imagine the feelings that are going through your heart right now!! Do you think you could pin point specifically what makes you nervous about Meghan working? Is it a sense of loss, facing the inevitable (kids do grow), realizing that she is not a litlte girl anymore... I think this would be a great piece for your week 5 assignment if you keep us in the loop and tell us about Meghan's days at work. Thanks for a very cute story.
